A screensaver by RateMyScreensaver.com, The Northern Lights of Jupiter, showcases 10 high-resolution images highlighting the magnetic fields and radiation belts of Jupiter and Saturn, both of which are stronger than Earth's. The screensaver is available for free.
Jupiter and Saturn are two of the planets in our solar system that are blessed with magnetic fields several times stronger than that of Earth. Not only that, but the radiation belts of both planets are enormous. Just like our planet, auroras have been spotted on Jupiter and Saturn, with the Hubble Space Telescope capturing some of the most striking images of these events.
While the auroras on Jupiter and Saturn are powered by the solar wind, there's an additional factor at play here. The moons of Jupiter, especially the fiery Io, are strong sources of auroras. These arise from electric currents along field lines, which are generated by a dynamo mechanism as a result of the relative motion between the moon and the rotating planet. Io has active volcanoes and an ionosphere, making it an ideal source for these captivating light-spectacles. To add to the magic, the currents generated by Io's auroras also create radio emissions that have been under study since 1955.
