nspluginwrapper is a software tool that provides a proxy plugin and a viewer, allowing users to run Netscape 4 compatible plugins. The tool acts as a bridge between the plugins and the web browser, making it possible to use non-supported plugins on updated browsers.
Although NSPluginWrapper is still in the testing phase, it still provides great results when working with the following plugins - Acrobat Reader (5.0.9 and 7.0.1), DejaVu Libre (3.5.14), Flash Player (7.0), Linux JPEG 2000 (0.0.2), Mplayerplug-in (2.80), and Real Player (10.0.5).
The installation process is quite straightforward - 32-bit plugins are automatically recognized and installed system-wide during package installation, provided they are available in the /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins directory. Additionally, users can manually install, remove or update plugins with the nspluginwrapper program.
When using NSPluginWrapper, installing an additional plugin becomes easy. For example, the JPEG2000 plugin can be installed into the user's Mozilla plugins directory using this command - nspluginwrapper -i ~/downloads/npjp2-0.0.2/src/npjp2.so. Users can also update (with detailed operations) all installed plugins from system and user's directories by typing nspluginwrapper -v -a -u. If a user wants to remove a specific plugin, they can do so using nspluginwrapper -r ~/.mozilla/plugins/npwrapper.npjp2.so.
Overall, NSPluginWrapper provides a great solution for utilizing 32-bit x86 plugins with x86_64 compiled Mozilla browsers. Although it is still a BETA software, it deals with a range of plugins efficiently and simplifies the plugin installation process.
