Oekaki is a cursor theme for X11 software, providing a unique visual style for desktop icons on Linux operating systems.
The developer notes that this is a basic version, but they may improve upon it in the future. For now, Oekaki is based on the Comix cursors and credit belongs to the original creator.
For those who aren't familiar, X11 is a windowing system that provides a standard toolkit and protocol for building GUIs on Unix-like operating systems and OpenVMS. X11 has been ported to many other operating systems and offers the framework for building GUI environments, including drawing and moving windows on the screen, and interacting with a mouse and/or keyboard.
X11 does not mandate the user interface, so individual client programs handle this, resulting in a wide variety of visual styles for X-based environments. X11 was designed to be used over network connections and offers network transparency, meaning that the machine running the client application can differ from the user's local machine.
X11 originated at MIT in 1984, with the current protocol version, X11, appearing in September 1987. The X.Org Foundation now leads the X project, with the current reference implementation, X.org Server, available as free software under permissive licenses.
