Old Laptop As Firewall is a Linux software that enables you to use an outdated Pentium I/II laptop as a firewall. It comes with a single floppy and supports 16-bit PCMCIA and PPP.
Booting into a 4MB ramdisk with a Minix version 2 filesystem, OLAF has been compiled with uClibc 0.9.28. Other key features include a 2.4.34 non-modular kernel, compressed with lzma, busybox 1.4.1, pcmcia-cs 3.2.8, pppd 2.4.4b1, iptables 1.3.7, dnsmasq 2.35, and room for an additional 100 kb of programs on the floppy.
However, there are limitations to consider. Currently, OLAF has only been tested with one computer behind the firewall, and limitations with the supplied chat script and Windows/Mac support are present. Additionally, there is currently no support for local timezones.
But with new releases come new changes. In the latest release, file permissions in /etc/* changed from 0600 to 0644 on all plain text files (except for gshadow, shadow, and ppp/pap-secrets), and the file permissions on /bin/busybox changed from 0700 to 0755. These modifications create the optimal user experience and better accessibility for programs like 'dnsmasq', which requires certain permissions to run seamlessly.
Overall, OLAF makes for a powerful and cost-friendly firewall solution, with enough features to get the job done, and room for growth. Check it out today!
