OpenOffice.org is a valuable software suite that has made its way to various operating systems as a cross-platform office application. Its default file format is the ISO standard OpenDocument Format (ODF) for data interchange, as well as Microsoft Office '97-2003 formats and many more. OpenOffice.org originated from StarOffice, formerly an office suite developed by StarDivision that Sun Microsystems acquired in August 1999. The purpose of releasing the suite's source code in July 2000 was to offer a free, high-quality alternative to Microsoft Office and reduce its market dominance. Later versions of StarOffice are based upon OpenOffice.org with additional proprietary components. OpenOffice.org is free software, available under the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL). Even though the project and software are informally referred to as OpenOffice, this term is a trademark owned by another party, so the project had to adopt OpenOffice.org as its official name.
