OpenQuicktime is a portable library designed to handle QuickTime™ media files on Unix-like systems.
The library is based on an upgraded version of the Quicktime 4 Linux library, making it feature-packed and robust. It supports decoding and encoding QuickTime files, including support for standard audio and video codecs such as MP3 audio. Additionally, the library features plug-in support, allowing non-open source codecs to be used alongside OpenQuicktime.
All Unix-based media players and encoders that require QuickTime format support can benefit from using OpenQuicktime. Although the library is relatively new, it's already being put to use by various applications, with Gstreamer being an example of the best application using OpenQuicktime.
OpenQuicktime, along with its utilities, applications, and codecs, is released under the GNU Lesser General Public License. It's important to note that some of the codecs have source codec based on other projects and are therefore released under the GNU General Public License. For additional information, please check the README and COPYING files in codec directories or refer to the online codec browser.
Updates to the latest version include minor changes in the codec_agsm.c and stsdwave.c files, while Ogg Vorbis requires its own special SampleDescription extension to be added, and OpenQuicktime is getting ready for it. Furthermore, OpenQuicktime hopes to introduce an increasing number of Binary-only codecs, such as the 3ivx codec, in the future.
