ODAC enables easy connectivity between Oracle and Borland Delphi and C++ Builder without the need for BDE.
ODAC's Net option enables direct connectivity through TCP/IP, eliminating the need for Oracle's software on the client side. Its use offers numerous advantages, including simplified data updating, the execution of lengthy stored procedures in a separate thread, and advanced design-time editors. Further, ODAC components possess interfaces (methods, properties) that are very similar to standard data access components, such as TDatabase, TQuery, and others. Additionally, it supports all data-aware components.
The Net option of ODAC supports Oracle 8 feathers, including BLOB, CLOB, and BFile data types, objects, arrays, references, and nested tables. It also provides automatic record locking and refreshing, which speeds up data fetching from the database. Furthermore, with TSmartQuery and TOraQuery, ODAC provides two ways of updating data—offering greater flexibility and ease of use, respectively.
An added benefit of the Net option is that it doesn't require the installation of Oracle client software on the workstation. Thus, it eliminates additional expenses for its installation and administration. Moreover, it's ideal for situations where installing Oracle client software is not advisable or cannot be accomplished—for instance, in a remote environment where a specialist is not available.
In general, the Net option offers direct connectivity to Oracle through TCP/IP protocols, with only the OS and TCP/IP protocol support being necessary to run applications built with ODAC Net. Notably, to connect to Oracle server with ODAC Net, users must have the address of the computer where the Oracle server is running, the listening port number, and the database instance name.
