Orxonox aims to become the ultimate 3D action shooter game with cutting-edge graphics and gameplay.
The development of Orxonox started back in May 2004, and since then, the team has worked hard to create their own game engine and game content for the initial levels. The game is partly developed by students of the ETH Zürich, who have brought their expertise to make the game more engaging.
The story of Orxonox is set in a time when the universe is expanding, and stars and galaxies adorn the skies. Black holes and supernovas add to the captivating experience, but the most significant change comes from the Noxons, who are on the verge of exterminating the human race. As players progress through the levels, they will encounter various challenges that require them to fight their way to their goal.
Orxonox's game engine was programmed from scratch, which is not common practice nowadays. The team wanted to understand how games work and create an engine that caters to their unique needs. However, as the project grew, they switched to Ogre to benefit from the knowledge of a large open-source development community.
Currently, there are about 20 active developers on the Orxonox team, mainly from the ETH Zurich and other Swiss universities. They aim to create an exciting 3D action game, one that is entertaining and captivating, making it the best open-source game in its category.
