This software tool enables easy conversion of geographical references between OSGB (Ordnance Survey Great Britain) and longitude-latitude formats. It allows quick and accurate inter-conversion of location data for location-based services, mapping, and geospatial analysis.
The osgb module provides two primary functions, osgb_to_lonlat and lonlat_to_osgb, which you can easily import into the top of the package. Additionally, some intermediate conversions are also provided for those who may find them useful. These are particularly helpful for working with eastings-northings.
It's important to note that, by convention, longitude and latitude are referred to and used in that order. Additionally, the lon-lats returned are OSGB36, not the more modern WGS84. However, the difference should be minimal -- less than 100 metres, in fact.
For example, the OS grid reference TM114 525, just outside Ipswich, should convert to the lon-lat 1.088975 52.129892 in OSGB36. In WGS84, this is equivalent to 1.087203 52.130350.
Overall, the osgb module is a reliable and efficient tool for converting between the Ordnance Survey system and the more widely used longitude-latitude system.
