OSGEdit is software for creating 3D scenes that are used in games and scientific applications. The software uses the OpenSceneGraph library to create detailed and realistic designs.
It's important to note that OSGEdit is a scene editor and composer rather than a modeller. However, you can use programs like Blender to create your objects and import them into OSGEdit to compose a complex OSG scene for your application with switches, lods, and more.
OSGEdit boasts of several key features, some of which include good design techniques that use a lot of design patterns, a tree that represents the graph where you can select nodes for all the operations, each node type having a properties dialog integrated in the window, tools to move, scale, and rotate transform nodes visually with the mouse, and much more.
With OSGEdit, you can open all the formats supported by OSG and also save all the formats supported for writing by OSG. There's even a tool for merging in files, allowing you to add child nodes that are read from a file, making it easier to compose a complex scene from several models.
To use OSGEdit, it's necessary to meet certain requirements. These include OpenSceneGraph, Producer, OpenThreads, GTK2 or GNOME2, and GtkGLExt or GTKGLArea.
The 0.6.1 stable release of OSGEdit added GLSL editing support with syntax highlighting and improved usability in several ways like by extending the outliner tree to new OSG types. The 0.7.0 RC1 development release, on the other hand, is a complete rewrite of the editor, from the core to the GUI, making it more extensible and easier to maintain. This new release adds support for every OSG object, direct manipulation of transformations, and lots of usability enhancements. If you encounter any bugs, feel free to send them to the bug tracking system.
