JavaScript is a powerful language included in OST-Box, which comes in handy when writing several simple functionalities. In contrast, Perl is versatile and helps gather data like MP3 titles and TV programs.
With OST-Box, users can browse photo collections with thumbs, zoom, and rotations. Additionally, the program supports the playback of video clips within photo collections, given mplayer installation. Users can also browse TV-recorded videos and start them up through mplayer.
The program allows control from lirc remote, although the interface/map.xml setting will have to be adjusted to configure the remote key. OST-Box comes with multiple language support and currently supports English and French. It is also effortless to add a new language by checking src/interface/ostbox-i18n.xml.
To use OST-Box, you would need some requirements such as sqlite> 3.1, libxml2, SDL, SDL_ttf, SDL_image, SDL_gfx, and Libjpeg.
In this release, the program features an interface to ACPI suspend, allowing the box to shut down when the user leaves and wake up automatically for the next TV recording. The lirc application was also improved by enabling connection to multiple lirc daemons and then providing a filtered lirc proxy for legacy applications.
In summary, OST-Box is an excellent set-top box program that is versatile, easy to use, and simple to extend.
