Pam_cloop is a PAM that attempts to mount encrypted partitions upon login.
For those who keep their home directory on an encrypted partition, this is especially useful. In the past, logging in as root, manually mounting your home directory, and then logging in again as your normal user was the norm. But with pam_cloop, all of that is now a thing of the past. Now, with this module, all you have to do is enter your username, passphrase, and normal password to log in without needing to go through multiple steps.
And the even better news? This module is designed to be secure while still being easy to use. In fact, the entire purpose of this module is to motivate users to encrypt all of their devices, by making the process as seamless and effortless as possible.
But what about pam_mount.so? Well, according to the developer, that software uses a hack to store passphrases in encrypted files. Although the developer didn't go into detail on this front, they did express their personal dislike of pam_mount.so. But, if you happen to find it more appropriate, then feel free to give it a shot.
