Parabola Project is a web-based tool designed to collect and organize news feeds from multiple sources in one place. It can be accessed via a browser and is useful for anyone who wants to keep up to date with the latest news in their area of interest.
To install Parabola, users must create a MySQL database named "parabola_p" and add a user with proper access to it. Users should subsequently edit the "config/database.yml" file to reflect a different username or password. Once installed, users can test the software by running the built-in webserver.
To update feeds, users can run the "updatefeeds.rb" script manually or schedule it to run once an hour using a scheduling program such as cron. The script must be pointed to the root of where Parabola is installed and the "public/cache/" directory must be writable by the user running the script.
Users can use the special tag ":nfp:" on a feed to ensure that its articles do not appear on the front page. Additionally, the latest release of Parabola includes various bug fixes and updates, including the ability to delete articles older than the "keep days" setting for a feed, display date on each article in the articles view, and quickly add new feeds using a "New feed" menu item.
