Paratim is an improved version of Paratrooper, which is a computer game where players control a character jumping out of a plane to avoid obstacles and land safely.
While the current version may not have many improvements compared to the original game, future releases promise to deliver more updates. In this game, players use a gun located at the bottom center of the screen to shoot at helicopters flying overhead. These helicopters drop paratroopers, and if four or more end up on one side of the gun, it's game over.
To avoid this outcome, players must shoot the paratroopers as they fall or the helicopters themselves. After a round of helicopters, planes will arrive and drop bombs aimed at the gun. If one of these bombs hits the gun, the game is over. Players must shoot the bomb or the airplanes to protect the gun.
The controls for the game are straightforward - use the arrow keys to point the gun left or right and shoot bullets with the up arrow key. Paratim requires SDL to run.
So what's new in this release? Paratroopers now discard their parachutes when they've landed, and they will start falling without a parachute and open it during the descent. All bombs now fall at the same speed, and a menu has been added. Additionally, there is now a high score tracker per session, and paratroopers without parachutes fall faster than those with parachutes. Players now receive points for shooting a paratrooper's parachute, but these points aren't added until they hit the ground. Finally, points are added if a paratrooper dies because another falls on top of them.
Overall, Paratim is an enjoyable game that fans of the original Paratrooper game will appreciate. With the promise of more updates on the horizon, it's definitely worth checking out for fans of classic games.
