Perl Panel is a Perl-based X11 panel tool for Linux desktop environments.
One of PerlPanel's strongest features is its applets – simple widgets that perform different tasks. Currently, the program ships with 36 different applets, all designed to make your experience as smooth and efficient as possible.
To use PerlPanel, you will need to have a few requirements installed, such as XML::Simple, XML::Parser, Xmms-Perl, Glib, Gtk2, Gnome2::VFS and Gnome2::Wnck.
In this release, PerlPanel has made some exciting updates. The panel border is now properly fixed by using low-level drawing functions, and there are new applets available such as Timer, Trash and Volume. Furthermore, some of the older applets have undergone a spring clean. You can now even drag launchers from the GNOME Menu onto the panel.
The .desktop file library has been split into a separate package called X11::FreeDesktop::DesktopEntry, which is available from CPAN, and the .desktop editor program has been overhauled to use it. Additionally, the BatteryMonitor applet has ACP/APM detection, and you can now upload your SSH key to remote hosts using the ShellManager applet.
Overall, PerlPanel is an excellent panel program that has received some great updates in this latest release. It is an incredibly versatile program that can be used with a variety of Window Managers and desktop-drawing programs. If you're in need of a new panel program, you won't go wrong with PerlPanel.
