Perl Pop3 is a Perl-based POP3 server that is fully functional and implemented.
One of the most exciting features of Perl Pop3 is that it never reads the mailbox into memory. Instead, the software merely reads what it requires to process the mailbox, which significantly reduces its memory requirements. Email delivery is an efficient process, as it involves printing to the client directly.
Perl Pop3 also employs the system's users, but its structure enables it to read users off a database using DBI/DBD. As such, configuring the platform to use existing systems is simple, and preparing it to utilize databases is straightforward. Perl Pop3 is a viable solution to the smtp authentication issue since it offers "popauth" or "relay-domains" (with sendmail). This has proven extremely effective for roaming users.
The software's logging can be extended beyond text files, and it can be configured to use any logging method available in Perl, including database systems. Security is not an issue since the software keeps input strictly controlled.
By utilizing a modifiable daemon as part of an e-mail solution, Perl Pop3 can provide numerous advantages over existing systems. Further development aims to incorporate more easily configurable extensions and plugins for rapid deployment and extensibility.
