Pinot is a Free Desktop metasearch software that allows users to search for files, emails, and webpages in just one go. It optimizes search results through customized settings, filters, and indexing for faster and accurate searches.
The software supports a range of sources including Sherlock-type search plugins as used by Mozilla Firefox, Google and ObjectsSearch SOAP APIs, and Xapian indexes whether local or remotely served by xapian-tcpsrv. The only restriction is limiting document types to plain text, HTML, PDF, and MS Word. As the project grows, however, it is expected that more formats will gain support through plugins.
Pinot's goal is to provide access for all search engines in one tool, making it easy for end-users. Additionally, Pinot leverages Xapian and potentially other IR toolkits such as CLucence in the future to index the user's personal documents. Pinot is therefore moving towards what Beagle and Kat do while still retaining a focus on metasearch.
Pinot is free software and is covered by the GPL. Overall, Pinot is an excellent tool for anyone looking to efficiently search multiple sources in the Free Desktop environment.
