The pkpgcounter software determines the page count of files for printing purposes. It generates output specifying the number of pages required to print.
Originally part of PyKota software since 2003, pkpgcounter is now available separately and can be used on its own. Its primary function is to parse the Page Description Language to count the number of pages in printable files. It is generic and can be used for various file types, including PostScript, PDF, PCL3/4/5, PCLXL, ESC/P2, DVI, TIFF, OpenOffice.org Writer and OpenOffice.org Impress.
When you launch pkpgcounter, it will print a single integer on its standard output that represents the total number of pages in all the files whose filenames you've passed on the command line. If you do not provide any argument or with a single dash in non-option arguments, it will read data from its standard input and other non-options arguments, which will be treated as filenames that represent files to parse.
This software is continuously improving, with added page counting mode support for Canon BJ/BJC, Structured Fax, and ASCII PNM file formats. Additionally, the SPL1 parser (also known as GDI) has been improved and now correctly accounts for all such files. The PCL3/4/5 parser has also seen improvements.
Lastly, you can find the list of all GhostScript output devices and their level of support online. With these updates or features and easy usability, pkpgcounter is an effective tool that can save you time and hassle when it comes to counting pages.
