Popdown is a GTK-based software that enables users to launch a popup menu. It can be used to easily access and manage various applications or features on a computer.
Popdown is beneficial to use with various apps that include brightside, which allows you to run Popdown when you put your mouse in a corner, compiz-fusion, letting you do the same thing as brightside in the general options, and run from a panel (a launcher button).
Key features of Popdown include speed, as it uses a cache and doesn't require parsing files each time, no footprint, as it runs only when the popup is displayed, the ability to pass files/URLs to a launcher (useful for drag'n'drop on popdown), and easy to configure, as it uses standard (freedesktop desktop-files). PopDown is also available in one simple executable file.
Popdown is a simple command line application whereby you give the folder containing ".desktop" files, and it will popup the outcome as a popup menu. If you want to create submenus, all you have to do is create subfolders in the previous folder and put ".desktop" files in. If you use Gnome, you can easily drag'n'drop entry from the "gnome application menu" to your Popdown folder, creating desktop-files. Popdown provides facilities to manage your menu, as a menu entry in each popdown menu: "edit desktop files": allowing you to edit efficiently your desktop files, "open folder": allowing you to open your Popdown folder, "refresh": allowing you to rebuild your menu from fresh data.
With PopDown, everything is ordered by name, with submenus being ordered according to the folder's name, and launchers are ordered according to "Name" (depending on your locale) entry in the desktop file. However, you can order as you like.
To order submenus, rename your folder. For example, change "Game" to "2500.Game," noting that you will need to use the "refresh" entry, to update your popup. Note that "2500." will not be displayed in the menu!
To order launchers, add an "order" entry in the desktop files, like this, "[Desktop Entry] ... order=2500 ...," noting that you will need to use the "refresh" entry to update your popup. By default, when there are no numbers in front of the name, it will take "5000".
PopDown has few requirements, including GTK+ version 2.10.x, python, and pygtk. Finally, to use popdown, chmod +x popdown ./popdown. Overall, Popdown is a smart, efficient, and reliable launcher with a plethora of features that make it stand out from the rest.
