PrefsOverload software enables detection of redundant preferences files by browsing Preferences Folder.
Preference Files are important, but sometimes they can be unnecessary. For example, they can become unnecessary when their mother application doesn't exist or no longer exists on your computer. After a while, the Preferences Folder may accumulate files created by trashed demo applications, or applications used briefly or not used at all. Unfortunately, all of these unused or unusable files continue to take up valuable disk space.
In addition, an application may fail to start-up if it has a corrupted or damaged Preference File. In this case, you need to delete the file, and the application will create a new Preference File to run as it did before the problem occurred.
PrefsOverload was designed to solve both problems. You can browse the Preferences Folder to detect unnecessary preference files, or it can display a list of damaged or probably unnecessary Preference Files, allowing for their deletion or being placed into the trash. PrefsOverload also allows for searching for specific Preference Files based on their type/creator or their creation/modification date.
The software's key features include accurate scanning that is based on the mother application, modification date, and internal preferences database, allows you to drag and drop integration with the Finder, scans for non-standard Preferences folder, runs on Classic Mac OS and Mac OS X, and has a full PDF help included. Additionally, PrefsOverload has AppleScript support and performs fast scanning.
The demo version has some limitations, such as a delay message at startup and not allowing for the deletion of preference files. However, with PrefsOverload, you can resolve some of the most common problems with preference files. The latest release includes fixes for a bug that prevented folder exclusion from working correctly, minor interface changes, and improvements.
