The Print Plug-In adds a simple printing functionality to The GIMP software, enabling users to easily print their designs.
In using the Print Plug-In, users can change various printing settings to match their preferences. The Printer option provides selections for a variety of printers, such as PostScript, HP DeskJet, HP LaserJet, and EPSON Stylus Color. The Output Type option controls whether the printed output is in color or black and white, depending on the type of printer and the image. The Media Size option controls the size of the output, while the Media Type option tells the printer what type of media is being used. Not all printers support this feature. The Media Source option determines which paper tray to print from, if the printer has the feature. The Resolution option controls the resolution of the output, while the Orientation option helps adjust the output's orientation. The Scaling option sets the size of the printed image, and the Brightness option controls the overall brightness.
The plug-in also supports printing to a file. To print to a file, select File from the Printer list. A file chooser dialog is displayed when pressing the Print button. It is important to note that when printing to a file, any existing file will be silently overwritten by this release of the plug-in.
For layered images, the print plug-in only reads the image from the active layer. To print a composite of all visible layers, users need to merge the layers (CTRL-M) and then print.
Most of the printer drivers utilize the highest supported resolution for a printer, except for EPSON Stylus Color 600, 800, 1520, and 3000, which only currently support 720 DPI printing in "compatibility" mode. This causes the drivers to be slow compared to the Windows and Mac drivers. Additionally, users do not get the use of the light cyan and magenta inks due to NDA restrictions.
