Prov is a printing utility designed for UNIX-like operating systems that allows users to create overlays for printed documents.
To install Prov, you need to edit the Makefile by setting the installation directory to the PROVDIR macro. By default, the installation directory is set to ~/prov. Once you have made the necessary changes, use the 'make' command to complete the installation process.
After installing Prov, you can configure it by editing the ~/.profile environment variables. Set the installation directory to the PROVDIR environment variable, and add ${PROVDIR}/bin to the PATH environment variable.
To use the sample print command, enter the command 'prov -text mesh.ov README | lpr -Pps-printer' or 'cat README | prov -text mesh.ov - | lpr -Pps-printer'. This operation prints the README file with a mesh overlay from the ps-printer postscript file.
You can easily customize the default point of the ank and kanji chars by setting the environment variables. The default point size for both is 12 points. The PROV_ANK_POINT and PROV_KANJI_POINT variables let you set the default point size. You can also set the x and y gaps for each character type using the PROV_ANK_XGAP, PROV_ANK_YGAP, PROV_KANJI_XGAP, and PROV_KANJI_YGAP variables.
To use the sample print command for the table overlay, enter the command 'prov -csv table.ov member.def member.dat | lpr -Pps-printer' or 'cat member.dat | prov -csv table.ov member.def - | lpr -Pps-printer'. This operation prints the member.dat file formatted by the member.def file and overlayed with the table.ov file from the ps-printer postscript file.
The latest release of Prov comes with some exciting new features, including the addition of environment variables for the -text option, such as PROV_ANK_POINT, PROV_ANK_XGAP, PROV_ANK_YGAP, PROV_KANJI_POINT, PROV_KANJI_XGAP, and PROV_KANJI_YGAP. The software now also includes a new macro for overlays called 'setXgap' and 'setYgap,' and a parameter for format definition called (x_gap, y_gap).
Finally, the latest release of Prov also lets you add comment lines starting with '#' to your format definition file, and it now includes a gsave at the top and grestore at the bottom of the generated postscript file. Overall, Prov is a must-have software program for anyone looking for an effective overlay printing utility.
