ProxIRC is a software proxy that lets users access both IRC and Instant Messaging services concurrently. With the help of the chosen IRC client, this software allows for smooth and hassle-free communication.
ProxIRC has a virtual channel that it creates to show the MSN connected users' status. This channel allows for easy communication with MSN friends by /joining #friend and starting to chat. The rest of the channels are provided by an actual IRC server and forwarded through the proxy. ProxIRC parses only messages that are outgoing from the IRC client and intended for the proxy. This ensures that the irrelevant information is forwarded to the IRC server.
In the latest release, some header files have been rearranged, and it seems that ProxIRC works seamlessly on FreeBSD. It's been reported that in the Makefile.an, -pthread should be used instead of -lpthread. ProxIRC will automatically join known contact users, and there are now several commands that can be invoked on the msn_info channel. One can add or remove contacts and set/unset the ability to accept a new contact request automatically. With AUTOAUTH turned off, one can be notified about a contact who is trying to add them.
Overall, ProxIRC is an excellent software to use for people who would like to connect to IRC and instant messaging platforms simultaneously using one preferred IRC client. Although it only offers partial support for MSN at the moment, it shows great potential with the addition of more features in the future.
