Proxy Applet is a network proxy configuration software that provides a quick and easy way to change your settings directly from your GNOME tray with just one click.
During a conversation with Epiphany developers about the same functionality but using GConf, they proposed that it was possible to move the Proxy Network capplet to the taskbar. However, this suggestion didn't meet all my needs. I was looking for an applet that would offer more functionality.
These are the features that I would find useful in Proxy Applet:
- A list of preset configurations that appear on a single click. Each configuration would be called a 'location,' and could contain the following options: No proxy, a manually configured proxy, a proxy auto-configuration (PAC), a remote URL, such as a local URI.
- Selecting another location should replace your GConf settings (GConf key: /system/http_proxy).
- The applet should have a preferences dialog to manage locations and even test a location by checking PAC syntax or seeing if the proxy works.
- In the future, the applet could have an automatic selection feature based on network-configuration of an IP address, network, gateway, etc. To do this, the applet would have to monitor network configuration changes.
- If tsocks or dante lib were in use, Proxy Applet could have a dialog to socksify the complete system. This could be achieved by adding this feature to /etc/ld.so.preload or running /etc/init.d/tsocks.
Overall, I believe that Proxy Applet is an excellent app that simplifies network proxy configuration by offering a range of useful functionalities. It deserves a top spot in the collection of any GNOME user.
