The PSLevel1 software provides printing support for first-gen LaserWriters in OS X that require PostScript Level1 input.
To successfully print with PSLevel1 in Mac OS X, users will need Ghostscript, a CUPS filter script called cups-o-matic, and a foomatic PPD for each supported printer. The installer for PSLevel1 comes with support for 5 printers: LaserWriter, LaserWriter Plus, LaserWriter IINT, LaserWriter IINTX, and Personal LaserWriter NT.
Adding a printer is simple and depends on the version of Mac OS X being used. For Tiger (OS X 10.4.x) users, opening the Printer Setup Utility and clicking on the Add icon at the top of the Printer List window is the first step. From there, a new window will appear, where users can select the printer, choose the correct PPD, and click Add.
For Jaguar (OS X 10.2.x) and Panther (OS X 10.3.x) users, opening Print Center (Jaguar) or Printer Setup Utility (Panther), holding down the Option key, and clicking the Add Printer button in the Print Center toolbar is required. From there, users will need to choose Advanced from the top popup menu, select the printer by name, and select the correct PPD before clicking Add.
It is important to note that the cups-o-matic filter that comes with this package is the forerunner of the Foomatic-RIP filter. Therefore, no benefit will be gained by installing the latest Foomatic-RIP filter. Overall, PSLevel1 is a useful software for those who need to print with first-generation LaserWriters that require PostScript Level1 input.
