PulseAudio Volume Control, also known as pavucontrol, is a straightforward volume control tool based on the GTK framework.
To use pavucontrol, you need to ensure that you meet a few requirements. First and foremost, the tool is currently tested on Linux only. The tool was developed and tested on Debian GNU/Linux "testing" from April 2006, but it should work on most other Linux distributions (and maybe Unix versions) as well, thanks to the GNU autoconf for source code configuration. You also need to have gtkmm and glademmm installed. Pavucontrol requires an installation of polypaudio (version 0.8) as well.
Installation of pavucontrol is simple, and the package is made with the GNU autotools. To get started, run ./configure inside the distribution directory for configuring the source tree. Next, run make for compilation, and then make install (as root) for installation of pavucontrol.
There have been several updates in the latest release of pavucontrol that are worth noting. The UI has been reworked to be more user-friendly, and context menu options have been added to kill a playback stream and select the default device. This release also uses prettier channel names, and non-application streams are filtered by default. Muting streams is now supported as well.
Overall, pavucontrol is a must-have tool for those who need complete control over their sound settings. Its simplicity, ease of installation, and user-friendly interface make it an excellent choice for Linux users who want to get the best audio experience possible.
