About Vim, it was created in 1991 by Bram Moolenaar as an extended version of vi editor. Vim's interface is based on commands given in a text user interface, and its full functionality is expressed through command-line mode. Although Vim may be difficult to learn initially, the basics can be easily understood with the built-in tutorial for beginners. The Vim Users' Manual details basic and advanced features for Vim, which can be read from within Vim or online. Vim also has a help facility (using the :help command) that allows the user to navigate through commands and features.
Vim is cross-platform, but it is most popular on Unix-like operating systems. The software is free and open-source, and its license includes some charityware clauses. Its GUI mode, gVim, adds menus and toolbars for commonly used commands. Nonetheless, Vim's full functionality remains anchored in its command-line mode, where users can use its extensive feature set to edit program source code in a more efficient manner.
