The ReMoot project is a wrapper for a pseudo-universal remote control, simplifying the process of controlling multiple devices with one control.
ReMoot is written in Perl and comes in two main executables. The first is the command-line program "remoot", which is typically executed either in a shell or using quick key-bindings. The second executable, "remoot-remote", is a proof of concept graphical frontend to remoot written in Tk. It's also possible to write a web-based frontend or use it remotely through ssh.
The official version of the package is maintained by Andreas Wallberg and Joel Berglund and is licensed under the Perl Artistic License (please see and for details).
ReMoot currently works with a range of apps, including Xmms, Amarok, Kaffeine, Banshee, Quodlibet, Totem, Xine, Juk, Rhythmbox, Noatun, and Kmplayer. What's especially exciting about the latest release is the addition of a new client/daemon model, which adds or improves support for many more apps: moc, mpd, quark, beep media player, pytone, gmusicbrowser, xmms2, and smplayer.
Do the Right Thing feature is even smarter than before, and the new release includes a faster and safer version of rewwwoot. All in all, this is a highly recommended tool for anyone looking to switch between media apps with ease. And for those who prefer debs, they're available too!
