Administer Linux remotely with ease using our software, specifically designed for Linux users. Simplify system management, securely access and control machines and automate tasks from anywhere with ease.
One small caveat is that if both users are behind NAT routers like home wireless routers, one of them must either configure their router or have SSH access to a server elsewhere on the internet. However, the assistant guides users through the process of securely providing or accessing a remote desktop or a remote shell over the internet.
To use this program, a friend can simply send a link to download Remote Help Assistant. Once downloaded, the friend should set the file's properties so the user has permission to execute it as a program, and then run the program and follow the instructions. It's worth noting that this project needs to be tested on as wide a variety of computers as possible, so users are encouraged to send bug reports stating which version of the program works on which distribution.
For Remote Help Assistant to function properly, certain packages must be installed, including x11vnc, krfb, vino, openssh-server, and openssh-client. The assistant uses SSH internally to secure the connection, which means that one user must have installed the openssh server package, and the other must have installed the openssh-client package. Typically, the person providing technical support installs the server, but it's recommended that the SSH server is disabled by default once it's installed.
Without a VNC server, the assistant will only be able to share a text-based session, but this can be used to install a VNC server which will enable users to fully utilize Remote Help Assistant. Overall, this is an incredibly helpful program for providing technical support to friends and family using Ubuntu, and the clear instructions make it accessible even to those without a technical background.
