Room Juice is a web-based application that enables multiple users to access a jukebox, allowing them to share and play music of their choice.
The software offers local music streaming, and additionally, it can stream music to other people through a program like Darkice and Icecast. It was developed with a clear mission of creating a jukebox platform that would be better than what was available at the time, and it is still subject to improvements.
Room Juice operates optimally under Linux, but its code can be configured to run on other UNIX flavors. Nevertheless, it is unlikely to function on Windows due to its reliance on command-line utilities (e.g., mpg321, mp3info, madplay, ogg123, ogginfo, mikmod, xmp, locate). However, since it is GPL licensed, users can modify its code as they see fit.
The web application is easy to operate. You select a web page, and then browse/search for music files. Once the files are located, they can either be added to the playlist or removed. When you initiate play, the music starts, and when you stop it, the music stops. Additionally, the software supports the veto option, which terminates the current song with a corny sound effect, allowing users to continue listening to the next track.
What makes this software fun is how permission can be granted by IP. For instance, the default permission is granted to the administrator's IP (192.168.1.*). They have absolute control over the program, including the ability to play, stop, add, remove songs, and veto. The other users have permission to browse the music and add songs to the playlist. The permission and access levels can be configured to meet individual needs.
Room Juice is particularly useful for multiple people in the same room or IRC channel. The inspiration for this software came from the movie "Empire Records," where characters could play music with one veto a day. However, in this software, vetos are unlimited.
To use the software, users require a web server (preferably Apache), php compiled as a cgi version, mpg321, madplay, ogg123, mikmod, and xmp. Mp3info and ogginfo are not required, but they offer additional cool features. The software is accessible through a web browser and requires music files in either MP3 or OGG format.
The new release of Room Juice fixes the problem of handling directories with single quotes and has added incomplete handheld support.
