ROX-Filer is a file manager software that allows users to quickly and easily manage files using a drag-and-drop interface.
Other notable features include background file operations such as copy, move, link, delete, permissions, and find, as well as a powerful expression-based find feature with on-line quick reference. The filer also mounts and unmounts filesystems and supports the XDND protocol and the new XDS extension for drag-and-drop file loading and saving. VfS support is included, allowing you to browse around inside zip files and other types of archives.
One of the best things about ROX-Filer is that it is fully configurable from the Options dialog box. User-defined key bindings are available for all menu entries, and a pop-up minibuffer allows you to navigate the filesystem using shell-style tab completion. The minibuffer can also be used for quickly entering shell commands. Additionally, a full manual is provided in HTML format.
ROX-Filer also includes several other handy features, such as XDND support, a Shared MIME Info Database, Icon Themes, and Dnotify support for Linux users.
In the most recent release, the MIME icon naming was updated to the latest freedesktop.org scheme to make GNOME themes work better with ROX-Filer. A work-around was also added for a panel placement problem with Compiz-fusion 0.7.4. Additionally, the program now supports the "Path" key in .desktop files, and several translations were updated, along with some bug fixes.
Overall, ROX-Filer is a very capable and customizable file manager that offers impressive functionality and speed. It is definitely worth trying out if you are looking for a new file manager.
