Rubix is a Slackware-based Linux distribution.
This Linux distribution is designed to support mission-critical hardware and is very admin-friendly. It runs on all i486 hardware and newer, optimized for i686. Rubix can be used for both desktop and server roles and comes with excellent hardware detection. Udev replaces hotplug for 2.6 kernels, and the latest KDE desktop version 3.5.1 supports it. Its default browser and email client are Mozilla Firefox 1.5.0.1 and Thunderbird 1.5.
It distinguishes itself from Slackware in multiple ways. Firstly, Rubix uses Arch Linux's 'pacman' software for simplified package management with dependency resolution. Secondly, it has a completely revamped init system that maintains the BSD style while introducing modularity. Thirdly, Rubix uses gcc 3.4.1 and almost all packages with SSP are compiled with PIE (Position Independant Executable), wherever possible. Rubix is not a hardened distribution as most of the software cannot be compiled with SSP.
Rubix is distributed with the Linux kernel versions 2.6.15.5, 2.4.32, and 2.4.32-grsec. It also supports ext2, ext3, JFS, XFS, ReiserFS, and Reiser4 (with 2.6 kernels) from installation. In conclusion, Rubix is a great Linux distribution that has distinct features and is worth considering by *NIX experts.
