The sc101-nbd software allows Linux to efficiently access a Netgear SC101 storage device as a block device and does not require adding a new kernel module.
The Netgear Storage Central 101 (sc101) device is an IP based block storage device that ships a clustered filesystem with the product. However, protocol documentation is not provided, and driver support is limited to Windows operating systems only.
With the sc101-nbd software, Linux users can now access the sc101 as a block device with ease. The software acts as a translator between the kernel's existing NBD protocol and the reverse engineered protocol used by the sc101. This allows users to run RAID, LVM, and any existing filesystems (ext2/3, ocfs2, etc) on top of the NBD devices.
It is important to note that the storage area created by the software is not interoperable with existing Windows clients. Additionally, it is currently unclear whether the software is compatible with the (unreleased) sc101t or other Zetera partnered devices.
Overall, the sc101-nbd software is a reliable and efficient solution for Linux users who need access to a Netgear SC101 storage device. With its latest release, the software has been tested on RHEL/CentOS 4.x and Ubuntu 7.04, offering even more versatility and compatibility.
