Scintilla is a compact source code editor and IDE tool for Win32 and GTK+. It provides a range of functionalities for coding and comes in a small package.
Scintilla’s selection margin allows users to add markers to indicate breakpoints and the current line. Unlike many other text editors, Scintilla permits more flexibility in styling choices, such as proportional fonts, bold and italics, multiple foreground and background colors, and multiple fonts. SinkWorld, a project currently underway, aims to make Scintilla more flexible, robust, perform better, and run on the .NET and Java virtual machines.
The development of Scintilla started as an effort to improve the text editor in PythonWin. The original developers struggled with such problems as those related to the Richedit control used by PythonWin; consequently, they decided to write a new edit control. Scintilla’s primary advantage over Richedit and other similar controls is that it treats styling changes differently. While styling changes made to Richedit are regarded as important persistent changes to a document, thus logged in the undo stack and marked as document’s dirtiness, such changes are mechanically recreated in Scintilla, allowing Scintilla to avoid persisting them as important changes.
Scintilla and SciTE are readily available for Intel Win32 and Linux compatible operating systems with GTK+. The software is easy to use, and it provides added features that coders will find appealing. Testing the Scintilla package will undoubtedly inspire satisfaction among users.
