Sdictionary is a dictionary software that works on multiple platforms and utilizes its own format, Sdict, for dictionaries.
Sdictionary is open-source software, and the .dct format is also open and described in documentation. All words and articles are stored in utf8, ensuring that you can use it with a wide range of languages. Two index levels, short and full, make it easy to navigate through the dictionary. Additionally, Sdictionary uses compression and provides tools to convert from text files to .dct and vice versa.
To make it even more user-friendly, the package includes a simple web dictionary that you can use right away. The C library framework and Perl API (Sdict.pm module) offer even more flexibility.
To get started with Sdictionary, you'll need Perl 5.8.x (tested with 5.8.5, ActivePerl 5.8.4 build 810/win32) and two below modules. Module Tk supported unicode (tested with 804.027); and Module Compress::Zlib in case of using compressed dictionaries.
Overall, users have found Sdictionary to be a reliable and flexible dictionary software. With its recent update that fixed reference navigation for some languages, it's only gotten better.
