ShadowCopy enables Spotlight to index CDs without them being inserted, allowing for easy searching of their contents.
ShadowCopy includes NDAlias sources for creating alias files, as well as source code for a background-only app with a status item. Adding ShadowCopy to your Login Items in the "Users" pane of System Preferences means that it will launch in the background every time you log in. You'll know it's working because a small CD icon appears in the upper right of your menu bar for three seconds.
It's worth noting that ShadowCopy doesn't differentiate between CDs, disk images, or network volumes. This means that it will index any volume blindly, which could be time-consuming. However, creating an empty folder with the volume's name in the DiskIndex folder will make ShadowCopy think there's already a shadow copy and skip the indexing process.
The only downside to ShadowCopy is that it uses the volume's name to differentiate it from other volumes. So if you have lots of CDs named "Untitled CD", you may run into some issues. Overall, Shadow Copy is an excellent solution for anyone looking to search through their CD collection without having to insert each one individually.
