Shrinkta is a GNOME desktop software that enables users to back up DVDs.
With this software, you can achieve four main objectives efficiently. Firstly, you can backup a single DVD movie title to a single layer DVD disk. Secondly, you can backup an entire DVD to a similar capacity disk. Thirdly, the software provides an easy way to master simple DVDs from compatible video and audio streams. Finally, it is important to bear in mind that this project is in its early stages of development and currently consists of two parts - a library that is called libdvd, and a small test program named shrinkta.
In terms of requirements, the software utilizes Tcrequant to resize the video stream if required while Mplex is used to multiplex the video and audio stream/s into a DVD compatible mpeg2 stream. It is important to note that MPlex is part of the mjpegtools package, while DVDauthor creates the DVD titleset and DVD Table of Contents. The disk image, on the other hand, is created using Mkisofs. Lastly, you can use Nautilus-cd-burner to write the image to the disk.
The latest software release comes with several additions that improve the user experience. For instance, the user manual has been rewritten and enhanced with screenshots. Moreover, help has been added to the shrinkta menu and preferences dialog. In addition to this, rpm spec file updates have been made to cleanup the build and make it more GNOME-a-fied. Other notable updates include the removal of the internal copy of dvdnav, the addition of dependency for libdvdread with check in configure.in, amongst others.
Overall, the software is a useful and efficient tool that enables users to carry out various DVD backup tasks with ease. Despite being a bit basic, Shrinkta comes with many features that guarantee a smooth experience, and the team is promising to keep updating the software to improve its capabilities.
