A flexible, multi-platform rendering software capable of handling non-Roman scripts.
One of the unique features of Graphite is its ability to create "smart fonts". These types of fonts can display writing systems with various complex behaviors, meaning they're ideal for working with languages that have intricate writing systems.
With respect to the Text Encoding Model, Graphite handles the "Rendering" aspect of writing system implementation. What does this mean? Well, simply put, Graphite takes care of the way text is displayed on the page, making it easier for developers to focus on other aspects of their software.
Graphite is intended to serve as the principal non-Roman renderer for the FieldWorks package, which is the new generation of linguistic and translation tools under development within SIL. However, the Graphite library is also available to any software developer who is working to develop multilingual text processing applications.
All in all, the SILGraphite project is an impressive piece of technology that's certainly worth checking out if you're working with non-Roman scripts.
