SlackPkg automates package management on Slackware Linux in a simple and efficient way.
However, it's important to note that dependencies are not automatically handled by this tool. This means that Slackpkg is not a replacement for pkgtool but a valuable add-on that enhances the user experience of Slackware Linux.
Installation of Slackpkg is a straightforward process. To get started, you need to download the "slackpkg" package and install it using the command installpkg. Once the installation process is complete, the next step is to select ONE (and only ONE) mirror for downloading packages from. You can edit your /etc/slackpkg/mirrors file and uncomment one of the available lines or include your mirror if you prefer. Currently, Slackpkg supports both FTP and HTTP mirrors.
Once you have selected a mirror, type "# slackpkg update" on your command prompt, and Slackpkg will automatically download some crucial files and update all package lists. With this, Slackpkg is now ready for use.
In the latest release of Slackpkg, there are some exciting new features. These include improved compatibility with Slackware 12.1, bug fixes in package name handling that prevented kernel-headers from being upgraded, and various corrections in the slackpkg.conf file. Overall, Slackpkg is an excellent package-management tool that is easy to use and a must-have for any Slackware Linux user out there.
