The project offers modules that facilitate smartcard authentication.
The software can work with various types of smart cards. The modules provided work with Schlumberger Cyberflex Access 16K and Cryptoflex 16K smart cards, as well as any Java Card 2.1.1 compliant smart card (i.e. both Schlumberger Cyberflex Access 32K and Gemplus GemXpresso 211/PK). The software has undergone development and testing with Towitoko's CHIPDRIVE and Schlumberger's Reflex 72 card readers, and has also worked fine with Gemplus GCR410, GCR400FD, GemPC, and Microsystem's SCM readers.
The functionalities of this software are many. It automatically stores private keys and public certificates on smart cards during the interaction with OpenCA for the "certification process". Smartcards can also be used to sign e-mails and e-news from within Netscape Messenger. Smartcards are also used to sign/verify every type of file with a simple shell command. Public key authentication protocols are used for smartcard-based authentication of local users to a system. Similarly, remote users can be authenticated using a smart card-enabled OpenSSH interactive command line. Lastly, users can browse and invoke all supported card commands for Cyberflex cards (ISO 7816 compliant and not) using this software.
