Snoopy vs. the Red Baron is a free and open-source combat game that can be played by one or two players. It is compatible with multiple operating systems including Mac OS X, Linux, BeOS, QNX, and Windows.
Originally, Snoopy was a small game with black and white graphics available for the Apple Macintosh. The game had almost all the levels of the new Snoopy implementation already available. Despite having poor graphics and difficult controls, it was still enjoyable to play.
During the process of learning programming, the creators of the game sought out simple yet engaging projects. The simplest way they found to learn a new language or API was simply to replicate an existing application. One of their friends had reprogrammed Snoopy in Object Pascal using SAT, the Sprite Animation Toolkit for their Classic II. This version of the game featured a fully functional AI, network play, and the implementation of an additional feature - bombs that could now be thrown.
The creators eventually discovered SDL, a toolkit that was ideal for the job. It was able to run on various operating systems including: Windows, Linux, MacOS, BeOS, and more. It became the toolkit of choice for multimedia programming. After several weeks, they had managed to port Snoopy with only a few finishing touches remaining.
Overall, their experience with SDL was positive, finding it easy to use and portable. They would recommend anyone interested in programming to give it a try.
