The Sony RM-X2S XMMS Plugin is a software that allows users to control XMMS using a Sony RM-X2S joystick. With this plugin, users can easily navigate through their music library and control playback without the need for a keyboard or mouse.
Installing the plugin is straightforward. Simply compile and install the plugin source using the below commands with added options as required:
./configure
make
make install
--enable-debug (to enable debugging prints)
--enable-nls (to enable localization)
Module options can be inserted into /etc/modules.conf to load the joystick module automatically. If you're not a root user or prefer a private installation, you can use the "make install-home" command to install the plugin to your personal XMMS directory (~/.xmms).
To set up the plugin in XMMS, begin by launching the media player and opening the plugin configuration panel with CTRL+p. Choose the Sony RM-X2S plugin and click the Configure button.
Ensure the device setting is correct by checking your joystick port. If you have only one port, the default of /dev/js0 should be sufficient.
You'll need to calibrate the joystick as well, which requires four measurements each lasting two seconds. Begin by pressing the calibration button, then press the OFF Button on your Sonystick and leave the button pressed throughout the measurement process. Follow the same procedure with the MUTE Button, and then press no button on the joystick. Adjust the joystick's precision to 5 to ensure optimal performance.
Configure your joystick's buttons by pressing them and listening for a beep to indicate a successful recording. Once satisfied, press the OK Button to save your configuration. Do not press cancel, as this will not save any changes.
Finally, enable the plugin in the XMMS preferences window. Please note that XMMS is required to use this plugin.
This release has fixed calibration and joystick detection issues and has been tested on Linux 2.6. Overall, the Sony RM-X2S XMMS Plugin is a useful tool for those who prefer to control their media playback with a joystick.
