Sophisticated is a software comprising of two BASH scripts.
The initial creation and testing of the scripts were carried out on a Mandrake Linux 8.0 installation, and so it may be necessary to alter the paths to the utility programs (ls gawk grep mail logger eject) to suit your system. Additionally, the location I chose to install Sweep in /home/sweep is different from the default directory, so you may need to make adjustments accordingly.
During the testing phase, my client's staff would leave new Sophos CDs in the drive over the weekend so that the update script could detect and use them. I run auto_update_ides thrice daily and auto_update_sweep once a day, and this is reflected in the example crontab which you can use as-is. However, we recommend caution and advise that you check whether there are any existing items in root's crontab first.
The scripts have proven effective and reliable for me, and they will likely work on most Unix-based platforms such as BeOS, OS/2, and OS/X. However, please note that there is no guarantee or warranty of any kind, and if you break anything, you shall bear the responsibility under the terms of the GPL.
In this release, we have several new features, including an explicitly defined "top directory" at the top of each script. This allows for more customized directory use, especially if you chose to install Sophos in /home/sweep. Additionally, the scripts now use $TMPDIR for scribbling if the /usr/local/tmp directory does not exist.
