SoundTracker is a Unix / X11 music tracking software, resembling the FastTracker program on DOS.
The software is free ("open source") and is licensed under the GNU GPL. SoundTracker can load modules of the popular XM and MOD formats but does not support the IT format at the moment.
Tracks can be arranged on patterns, which can be grouped to form a song. A pattern typically has 64 entries per track, cycled through at equidistant time intervals for tracks played at the same time.
The software also allows users to create a basic drum set by placing a bass drum at entries 0, 4, 8, and 12 etc. of one track and some hihat at entries 2, 6, 10, and 14 etc. of a second track.
The modules contain various patterns and samples, including a position list that specifies the playback order of the patterns, which form a song. The player code used is the one from OpenCP.
Requirements for using SoundTracker include the audiofile library. The latest version of the software comes with several improvements, including permanent channels support, trim, and crop function in sample editor, improved effect interpolator, and SDL output driver, among others.
SoundTracker is easy to use and comes with an intuitive interface that will help users navigate through the software. The software is perfect for users who want to create music without having to invest in expensive software.
