Unix SourceSafe is a software tool that offers TCP-based command-line accessibility to Source Safe and VSS repositories, both local and remote.
To use the Unix client (called "ss"), all you need is Perl >= 5.4 and network TCP port 5901 access to the server. On the other hand, the windows server (called "ssserv") requires Perl >= 5.6 to run. It's worth noting that ssserv has only been tested with ActivePerl_ 5.8 as 5.6 experienced stability issues. Although ssserv is designed to run as a stand-alone process, you may need to use some service helpers for configuration (which is not described in this review). Finally, ssserv also requires the SourceSafe command-line client to be installed locally, which is usually installed automatically with the SourceSafe software.
One exciting feature of the most recent release is the improved performance when using the "update" and "diff" commands, which are thanks to a local ssserv hash cache. The new "help" and "monitor" commands are also included in this release, providing users with more flexibility and convenience.
Overall, SourceSafe for Unix provides an excellent way to easily and efficiently access your Source Safe/VSS repositories through TCP. While certain requirements must be met, such as having the right versions of Perl and the SourceSafe command-line client installed, once the software is up and running, you'll be able to efficiently manage your software development projects in no time.
