Speak Mail is an email client that speaks messages aloud, suitable for visually impaired individuals or those who prefer an auditory interface.
Another impressive feature is that it comes with the speaktcl editor, which is a text editor that includes a speech feature. This editor is based on the code from tcledit: a Linux console based editor in pure tcl, but it has been modified for speech by Joe Kamphaus in 2007.
Using Speak Mail is very easy. To navigate through the menus, you simply use the arrow keys. Once you have found an item that you want to select, you can press the "Y" key or simply hit enter. When Speak Mail needs you to answer a question, you can do so by answering "Y" or "N".
As previously mentioned, Speak Mail uses speaktcledit for editing emails. If you need any help in using speaktcledit, you can refer to the speaktcledit.README file for documentation.
When you first run Speak Mail, you will be prompted to provide your email address and mail server information so that it can set up your email account. If you need to change any of this information later, you can do so by selecting "Setup" from the main menu.
To use Speak Mail, you will need several Perl modules, such as PerlSpeak.pm (a Perl Module for text to speech), Email::StripMIME, Email::MIME, Email::Simple, Net::POP3, and Mail::Send. You will also need a text to speech system like festival or cepstral.
Overall, Speak Mail's talking menu and speech assisted setup make it an interesting option to consider as an email client.
