Starchart software generates star maps.
The program displays stars, planets, nebulae, clusters of stars, and galaxies through various display and printer devices. Starchart allows users to customize their maps and create their own custom star charts for specific objects. The program also enables users to create figures of the sky overhead at any location and time, as in the Sky and Telescope centerfold or planispheres.
In addition to its extensive features, Starchart is highly user-friendly. The software labels stars with their name, number, letter, and/or magnitude. It also labels other objects by name and uses color for objects and stars by spectral type, when available for the given device.
One of the most notable features of Starchart is its use of a latitude-longitude grid for defining the locations of celestial objects. The program uses right ascension or RA for longitude and declination or DEC for latitude for accuracy.
Moreover, Starchart allows custom star databases to be used to produce maps of the sky in, for example, 10,000 B.C. This feature makes it possible to understand the historical context of celestial events.
Starchart's newest release includes autoconf & automake for increased efficiency and ease of use. Overall, Starchart is an invaluable tool for astronomers, astrologers, and anyone with an interest in celestial objects.
