StartupItem Manager enables the management and customization of StartupItems.
This tool enables users to create, edit, enable/disable, and delete startup items with ease. It offers a simple and effective way for MacOS X users to manage their system services and customize them according to their preferences.
The latest release of StartupItem Manager brings forth several improvements and bug fixes. It is no longer considered crippleware and only nags users once in a while. The format of the StartupItem script has been changed to accommodate the new format of Mac OS 10.2. Additional functions have been added to the scripts for starting, stopping, and restarting the StartupItem. Though rudimentary, the scripts are capable of stopping the running items. Programmers with knowledge of UNIX can insert the functionality into the script themselves, as existing scripts are not modified or updated to the new format.
The StartupParameters.plist format has also undergone slight changes. The OrderPreference now defaults to 'Last,' ensuring the item will launch late enough to ensure that any dependencies that have not been specified in the plist are available. The program now handles spaces in file paths better, thanks to bug fixes that were implemented addressing the concerns of some users.
The Authorization framework has also been improved, now handling file paths to tools more efficiently. The source code to this framework is now available as open source under a BSD-style license. The current version is compatible only with Mac OS 10.2. However, version 1.0.4 remains available for users of Mac OS 10.1. Overall, StartupItem Manager provides an excellent utility for managing custom startup services on MacOS X, making it quick and effortless to customize system services.
