SLAD is a software tool designed for local security checks on GNU/Linux systems.
SLAD is versatile and can be used as a stand-alone tool or in conjunction with Nessus. For the latter, two NASL plugins provide an interface between Nessus and SLAD. With Version 2.0, users get an XML interface for parameters, which makes it easier to add new audit-parameters and tools to the software. There's also a development-documentation in cvs to guide administrators through the process.
One of SLAD's key strengths is its compatibility with multiple platforms. Users can verify the software's functionality on platforms such as RedHat Fedora Core 3, SuSe 9.2, Debian 3.0 (woody), Debian 3.1 (sarge), ERPOSS3, and Gentoo Linux 2004.3. Its extendable plugin architecture supports various GPL-based security scanners and auditing tools, including John-the-Ripper, Chkrootkit, LSOF, ClamAV, Tripwire, and TIGER—all of which are included in the package.
SLAD's reporting capabilities are exceptional, thanks to its ability to deliver reports from installed auditing and analysis tools like John-the-Ripper, Chkrootkit, LSOF, ClamAV, Tripwire, and TIGER. When used with Nessus, the individual reports are wrapped in a standard Nessus report.
SLAD, as well as SLAD NASL plugins, are available for download on this website. Users can install it with the help of the easy-to-use GTK installer, which downloads the latest stable release binary and installs it on the target system. With just the login details for the target system, users can install and run SLAD effortlessly.
