The tbibtools project offers a straightforward bibtex parser that relies on regular expressions.
It is imperative that users exercise caution when using this script to avoid losing valuable information or ending up with corrupted bib files. Backups should always be made, and the output should be thoroughly checked, especially when using the -f command-line option. It is important to note that any features of bibtex that are not known or used by the script or class will most likely not be supported, so users should be aware of this limitation.
The latest release of tbibtools includes several new features and fixes, such as sortCrossref which puts cross-referenced entries to the back, and a new format named (un)selectCrossref, which allows users to view only entries that are (not) cross-referenced. The syntax of the query command has also been changed to query FIELD1 => RX1, FIELD2 => RX2, etc., and the script now automatically merges duplicate entries and certain conflicting fields. Lastly, a problem with --ls has been addressed in this release.
Overall, the tbibtools project is a useful tool for bibtex parsing, provided users take precautions to ensure their files are formatted correctly and check their output carefully.
